Kilmar Abbrego García’s wife says that seeing a photo of him alive is “very overwhelming”

Jennifer Vásquez Sura, the wife of Kilmar Abrego García, deported by mistake, spoke exclusively about “Good Morning America” of ABC on Friday morning in his first interview since Senator Chris Van Hollen met with her husband in El Salvador on Thursday.

Van Hollen on Thursday night launched a photo of himself with Abrego García, which was the first time that Vásquez Sura had seen it since he detected it in a photo among several other migrants taken to the mega prison of El Salvador last month.

“It was very overwhelming,” said Vásquez Sura about seeing the image on Thursday night.

“The most important thing for me, my children, his mother, his brother, his brother, was to see him alive, and we saw him alive,” Michael Strahan de Gma told Michael Strahan.

Abrego García, a Salvadoran native who has been living with his wife and children in Maryland, was deported in March to the Cecot prison in El Salvador, despite a 2019 court order that prohibits deportation to that country due to fear of persecution, after the Trump administration said he was a member of the MS-13 criminal gang.

The Trump administration, although he acknowledged that Abrego García was deported to El Salvador by mistake, has said that his alleged affiliation of MS-13 makes him inelegable to return to the United States.

After a federal judge ruled earlier this month that the Trump administration must “facilitate” the return of Abrego García, and the United States Supreme Court said the ruling, the polarizing case has become a proof of the power of the executive branch against the courts.

Vásquez Sura, speaking with GMA, denied that her husband is a member of MS-13 or any other gang.

“I will not stop fighting until I return home, until I know he is safe,” Vásquez Sura told Strahan.

“37 days have passed since March 12, since my husband was kidnapped,” said Vásquez Sura. “It has been an emotional and emotional roller coaster, sincerely.”

“We have been together for seven years. He has been incredible. He is a very loving husband and an incredible father. They were young parents trying to live the American dream,” said Vásquez Sura, who is an American citizen, along with the couple’s children.

“Our faith has grown and I keep it in my prayers to bring it back home,” he said.

Strahan asked Vásquez Sura about his presentation for an order of protection of her husband in 2021, in which she cited being slapped, hit with an object and detained against her will. The case closed approximately one month later, when he did not file a hearing in the court.

“He took a temporary order of protection against her husband in 2021. Did you be afraid of your husband?” Strahan asked.

“My husband is alive,” Vásquez Sura replied. “That’s all I can say.”

Earlier this week, in a statement issued to ABC News through his lawyer, Vásquez Sura said: “After surviving domestic violence in a previous relationship, I acted as a precaution after a disagreement with Kilmar when looking for an order of protection in the event that things intensify. We could work in this situation in private as a family, even because of the advice. We have continued for him and demand it.

Van Hollen, a democratic senator of the native state of Vásquez Sura de Maryland, flew to El Salvador on Wednesday to try to meet with Abrego García.

“I said that my main objective of this trip was to meet Kilmar. Tonight I had that opportunity,” said Van Hollen in the publication of social networks in which he shared his photo with Abrego García. “I have called his wife, Jennifer, to transmit his love message. I hope to provide a complete update on my return.”

Vásquez Sura was told that the meeting between Van Hollen and Abrego García was created by the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, ABC News, a source close to the family.

The source said Abrego García and Vásquez Sura could not speak.
